DHL eCommerce Announces 2026 Peak Season Surcharges
DHL eCommerce has released its 2026 Peak Season Demand Surcharge schedule, replacing last year’s single flat peak period with three pricing windows:
- October 25–November 21, 2026
- November 22–December 26, 2026
- December 27, 2026–January 16, 2027
The highest charges generally apply during the November 22–December 26 holiday window. This means shippers can no longer model DHL peak costs using one surcharge for the entire season. Exposure will depend more heavily on when a package ships, as well as its product, weight and zone.
Key DHL Peak Surcharge Changes
For Parcel Ground and Parcel Expedited shipments in Zones 1–8, the per-package surcharge will move from $0.50 during the first period to $0.90 during the core holiday window, then return to $0.50. Last year, the surcharge remained at $0.62 throughout peak season.
Zones 11–13 will carry a $0.95 surcharge throughout all three periods, compared with $0.67 last year.
Parcel Plus shipments will also become more expensive. For packages weighing 11–25 pounds and traveling within Zones 1–8, the surcharge rises from $1.07 last year to $1.15 during the first and third periods and $1.45 during the core holiday period. In Zones 11–13, it increases from $1.57 to $1.80 throughout peak.
Returns present another area of meaningful exposure, particularly for heavier, longer-zone shipments. Parcel Return Plus packages weighing 26–70 pounds will carry a $9.10 surcharge in Zones 5–10, up from $6.50 for the corresponding Zones 5–8 band last year. Parcel Return Ground rises from $5.50 to $7.70, while DHL has also expanded the longer-zone grouping to include Zones 9 and 10.
DHL International Peak Charges Jump 181% During the Holiday Window
For U.S.-outbound Packet International and Parcel International Standard, Direct and Expedited shipments, the DHL surcharges will follow the same three-period pattern: $0.50, $0.90 and $0.50 per package.
Last year’s international peak surcharge was $0.32 per package. This year’s $0.90 core holiday charge is nearly three times last year’s amount.
DHL has also published peak surcharges for Canada-to-U.S. Parcel International Direct products. Those charges vary by weight, zone and peak period.
What This Means for Shippers
DHL’s peak period begins later this year, on October 25 rather than October 5. However, the new structure concentrates the highest pricing into the five weeks from November 22 through December 26.
Shippers should model costs by week rather than applying one average surcharge across the season. They should also examine their expected shipment mix by product, weight and zone, with particular attention to:
- Volume scheduled for the core holiday period
- International shipments
- Returns
- Heavier packages
- Shipments traveling to Zones 11–13
Promotion timing, fulfillment schedules and return policies may all affect the final cost. Moving discretionary volume outside the most expensive window could create savings, but the opportunity will vary based on each shipper’s actual profile.
